Freight Continues to Lead Growth

Many resources shows us how the trucking industry is vital to our living and the overall economic functioning of the country.

Planes, trains, and ships are able to move the biggest quantities of goods at one time. But trucks are by far the most crucial mode of transport. Nearly 71% of all the freight tonnage moved in the U.S. goes on trucks. Without the industry and truck drivers, the economy would come to a standstill.

Truck drivers haul a variety of goods with machinery, electronic and motorized vehicles making up 27 percent of goods shipped by truck drivers in America. The most common thing trucks haul is machinery, followed by electronics and motorized vehicles. Additionally, mixed freight includes commodities such as food and restaurant supplies. The annual value of shipped goods comes to a large number of 139,463,000,000. Out of this number, 15% of these goods are new furniture and other manufactured products being transported around the country. They are followed closely by agricultural items and fish products, needed for the nourishment of the population.

To move 10.5 billion tons of freight annually requires over 3.6 million heavy-duty Class 8 trucks and over 3.5 million truck drivers. That equates to about 30 pounds worth of goods for every man, woman, and child in the country. It also takes almost 39 billion gallons of diesel fuel to move all of that freight. Simply – without trucks, America stops.

Although it may seem like food supplies on supermarket shelves are boundless and always there when you need them. But in fact, experts predict that most grocery stores would start running out of food just three days after long-haul truckers stopped working.  Walmart has started hiring its own truckers and hired more than 1,400 new truckers in 2018 and hundreds more so far in 2019. Amazon is also a top producer in the trucking and shipping industry. This is allowing people to have access is thousands of products and have it at their fingertips within 1-2 days. Truck drivers are needed most with goods constantly ready and available to be shipped.

Let’s face it, without the trucking industry we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the things we have. Shelves would be empty and people would undoubtedly be in a state of panic if that happens. We as people of the U.S and all over the world, rely on trucking to provide us food, products, entertainment and much more. The trucking industry statistics don’t lie!
